US Senate Moves Toward Deal To End Longest Govt Shutdown In United States History
Washington, DC: On the 40th day of the most extended government shutdown in US history, senators returned from recess Sunday for a rare weekend session, preparing to vote on whether to advance a House-passed spending bill aimed at reopening the government.
Members of the House, who last voted on Sept. 19, returned to the nation's capital to approve the Senate-passed funding package that would reopen the government. Almost all Democrats opposed the measure, saying it didn't do enough to address the rising cost of health care. Most Republicans supported it, though.
The Senate-passed bill to end the record-long government shutdown moved to the full House for a final vote after a key House panel advanced it early Wednesday.
The final Senate vote, 60-40, broke a grueling stalemate that lasted more than six weeks as Democrats demanded that Republicans negotiate with them to extend health care tax credits. View on euronews
