A rarely-seen leatherback sea turtle washed up dead on the northern Outer Banks last week.

according to a social media post from the Outer Banks Network for Endangered Sea Turtles. Leatherbacks are the largest sea-turtle species and the only species that doesn’t have a hard shell.

Around noon on Monday, Nov. 4, NEST (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) posted this announcement.
