Six months after fire struck a giant lithium-ion battery storage facility, the EPA has endorsed a plan to remove the highly toxic, still-flammable batteries.

The federal government has pulled funding for at least 21 projects related to farming, food systems, and environmental justice to comply with one of Trump’s early executive orders.

Experts have warned that if the EPA were to bring back dicamba, the results would be devastating—as they have been in the past when the chemical was used.

Officials with a small but mighty California agency known as the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment said they remain committed to rigorous science.

Cotton and soybean farmers had sprayed dicamba on crops that were genetically engineered to resist the herbicide, which controls tough weeds. Environmental groups have criticized the chemical because it can drift from where it is sprayed and damage neighboring plants.

Under the agreement, which was signed July 17, Vistra will be responsible for the removal of the damaged lithium-ion batteries under the EPA’s oversight.
