A top official at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) gave an inside account of the “chaos” and “confusion” that overtook the agency when the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) arrived at the consumer watchdog in early February.

CFPB Chief Operating Officer Adam Martinez described how DOGE agents arrived at the agency with barely an hour's notice, which led to confrontations with CFPB staff who demanded identification from the agents.

Martinez’s testimony — which will continue on Tuesday afternoon — is meant to address questions around what’s happening at the financial regulation agency, before a judge decides whether to grant a preliminary injunction to preserve agency data,
