UMass Chan Medical School’s leader Dr. Michael Collins will step down next year, the school announced, ending a nearly 20-year tenure as the leader of the state’s only public medical school.

Paul Kapteyn Dr. Michael Collins, the longtime chancellor of the UMass Chan Medical School who expanded both enrollment and funding, said Tuesday that he will step down from the position in July 2026.

On the day that he announced plans to step down as chancellor, he spoke about ensuring a smooth transition at a time of uncertainty.
