Plautilla Nelli was a Renaissance nun born in 1524 into a wealthy Florentine family who entered a Dominican convent at age fourteen and taught herself the art of painting. Within the convent that encouraged devotional art she rose to lead an all-female workshop and eventually became prioress. In the 1560s she created a monumental 21-foot-long oil painting of The Last Supper signed with the humble phrase Pray for the paintress. Although her work was lost for centuries it was restored over four ye
